The Century Club San Diego: It's Not Just About the Golf

August 28, 2026 - Pamela Holden took the time out of her busy schedule to educate us about the Century Club San Diego.  Sure, most people know the Century Club for the Farmers Insurance Open — that big PGA Tour event out at Torrey Pines every year with the pros, the crowds, the TV cameras. But honestly, the golf is kind of the side show. The real story is what the club does with all that money once the tournament wraps up. Since 1961, these folks have been quietly funneling proceeds right back into San Diego — funding youth programs, backing places like Monarch School for kids experiencing homelessness, and supporting junior golf education around the county. It's a group of local business and community leaders who volunteer their time and connections, not just write checks. Back in 2011 they gave over $1.3 million to more than 200 different charities. So next time you hear "Century Club," think less "golf tournament" and more "this city's quiet philanthropy machine that happens to use golf to get it done."  Thank you, Pamela, for sharing your time with us today and giving us such a great look into the Century Club and everything it's done for San Diego.

Guest Speaker - Foundation for the Children of  the Californias

August 28, 2026 – This morning, DMSB Rotary welcomed Lorena Gurule-Montes, Development Director for the Foundation for the Children of the Californias (FCC), as a special guest speaker. FCC is a tri-national nonprofit uniting partners across Mexico, the U.S., and Canada to improve the health and nutrition of underserved children in the San Diego–Tijuana region. Their work supports Hospital Infantil de las Californias, which provides more than 25 pediatric specialty services and treats over 4,000 patients each month — with no child ever turned away for inability to pay. Hearing firsthand about the scale of this impact was a powerful reminder of what a difference cross-border collaboration can make for children's health. Women's Empowerment International
Thank you Sophie Pauken, Development Coordinator for Women's Empowerment International, for informing us about all the great work you are doing around the world to empower women with tools to work their way out of poverty, care for their families, and strengthen their communities. 
 
WEI provides vital grants to high-impact, vetted nonprofit partners implementing economic empowerment programs for women experiencing poverty, locally and around the world. 
 
They have provided over $60,000 in help and funding to one of our partners, OEF in El Salvador, who we visited last year on their 40th anniversary, and saw first hand many of the projects they support. Please join Susan Hennenfent, fellow DMSB Rotarian/WEI Board Member &  former President, and others to celebrate all of their accomplishments on October 4.

Since our inception in 1992, the Del Mar Solana Beach Rotary Club has been dedicated to making a difference in our community and beyond. As part of Rotary District 5340, encompassing 67 clubs in San Diego and Imperial Counties, we're driven by a passion for service and a commitment to meaningful impact.
